My name is Jacky Ayton and I’m doing work placement at the Sydenham Community Centre for the past 3 weeks and I have been loving it. The last 6 months I have been completing a Certificate 3 in Community Services at the St Albans University and working at the Centre is my first taste of community work. I don’t think I could have picked a better place. It feels like I have been apart of the Community Centre for longer than 3 weeks so that shows what great people I have met here. Everyone has been very welcoming and has gone out of their way to make me feel like one of the team. Marilyn who’s the busiest women took time out to explain and help me fit in and also assisted with finding material for my assessments. She has been a really lovely person to me, not to mention she is one funny lady. Marilyn also introduced me to some interesting and passionate women. It was exciting to witness their creativity when getting the job done of looking after the community. I sat in Georges “Living in English Class” and the man is a sweet pea and George that means I think you a nice guy. Peter is a very patient guy and has let me be apart of whatever he happens to be working on. Not just a computer guy, he is pretty handy with a pen, ‘keyboard’ at putting together funding to get a disable door for the front of the Centre. Good luck to the Centre with that! Jane in the front office has been kind with her time and smiles.
I would like to say thank you to all the staff at the Centre for making my first experience of working with the Community a positive one and you have all inspired me to follow my dream.
